Simple Home Electrical Safety Tips You Should Know

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s safe to say that electricity keeps a large part of a modern home going. What isn’t always safe, is the upkeep of some key points in electrical maintenance. Whether you are a homeowner or you are renting your home, having a good base of knowledge when it comes to electrical tips for safety is essential.

Ensure that your home environment is safe for the whole family at all times with these 7 electrical tips.

1. Switch The Power Off When Necessary

Before you do anything with the electrical outlets or connections in your home, be sure to switch the power off. If there are any sparks or a fuse blows, switch the power off immediately and get an electrician to conduct an electrical inspection.

2. Install Ground Fault And Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters

A ground fault circuit interrupter can save you from an electrical shock. It is there to shut off a current if it detects a diversion caused by either a short circuit or an insulation issue somewhere down the electrical line. Having these installed in kitchens and bathrooms are necessary because of the water usage. An arc-fault circuit interrupter will help to prevent a fire from breaking out due to an electrical complication.

3. Distribute The Outlets In Use

The more the merrier when it comes to the outlets you make use of in your home. Try to avoid having too many small or large appliances plugged into one outlet. If you are able to spread the load out between several outlets, the safety risk is lower.

4. Make Sure Outlets Are Child Proof

Installing outlet covers is a great way to protect children from getting hurt. Even if you have a child visit every once in a while, it’s still safer to have these installed. Spring-loaded outlet covers will close when the outlets are not in use, these are the best option.

5. A Warm Outlet Needs Attention

It is essential that you develop an awareness of the electrical health in your home. Don’t ignore something that doesn’t seem right – you don’t want to mess around with electricity. One of the ways to do this is to ensure that your outlets are never hot or warm to the touch on the outside. The wall or floor around the outlet also needs to be cool. If you find that an outlet is warm, you need to call an electrician immediately.

6. Don’t Ignore Flickering Lights

When it comes to electrical complications in your home it is better to address them than to ignore them. If you ignore electrical issues it could cost you time and money and could become a fire hazard, putting your family in danger. A flickering light might be as simple as a loose bulb however if you tighten or replace the bulb and it still flickers call an electrician to check it out.

7. Have A Safety Protocol In Place

Make sure you have access to a usable fire extinguisher, pouring water on an electrical issue is a huge safety hazard. It’s also a good idea to ensure the family is aware of how to respond in an electrical emergency by knowing who to call, or how to work the fire extinguisher, or how to switch the power off.
