Invest in Whole House Surge Protection

Reading Time: 2 minutes

You may wonder if having a whole home surge protector is really necessary. To be quite frank; yes, it is. A surge protector has one key function; protecting your home and electrical appliances from an excessive burst of electrical voltage. This protector then diverts the excess voltage into the nearby grounding wire, protecting all of your electrical appliances from damage. If the excess voltage is not diverted into a good grounding wire, the current will follow any other wire until it reaches one of your appliances such as a telephone or fax machine.

Regardless of the type of electrical circuit you have installed in your home or the type of wiring, nothing is immune to experiencing a power surge. The immense voltage can cause serious damage and even shorten the life span of your expensive appliances and electronics.  Aside from weather factors such as lightning storms or damaged wiring, surges can also be traced back to your electrical appliances or high-powered electronics.

Normally you would think that external influences would have the greatest impact, but high power electrical devices are often the cause of electrical surges. High power electrical devices such as a water heater, a HVAC unit or even a refrigerator may be the reason that there are constant spikes in electrical current, affecting your home appliances. The problem lies in the fact that, more often than not, you won’t see the extent of the damage until it’s irreparable and needs to be replaced.

The importance of protection

In the same manner that a deep-sea diver wouldn’t go under water without the proper equipment, it’s important that you protect your home and appliances as well. There is no telling when the next power surge will occur or what will be most affected. It is important to ensure that your electrical system is not only grounded, but that you have whole house surge protection in place.

The best defense is a good offense

Regardless of the number of power strips you may have, it won’t keep you protected. Often times a power strip is nothing more than an extension cord. It is important to speak to a professional electrician who has the necessary experience and technical skills to ensure that your system performs in a peak condition without risking damage to your home. Just because you feel that saving a few dollars is important, it doesn’t mean that you should skimp on protecting your home – the cost of replacing a refrigerator, an oven, various lights, computers, telephones, home entertainment systems, modems and even GFCI plugs can cost you a pretty penny.
