Can A Career In Plumbing Give Me Job Satisfaction?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Anyone who’s ever had a plumbing problem knows it can be a real pain. From leaky faucets to clogged drains, plumbing issues can be major nuisances. Fortunately, some people have made it their job to fix plumbing problems, and they love doing it, too!

But what is it about plumbing that makes people so satisfied? For one thing, plumbing job satisfaction is relatively high since it ranks #4 in best construction jobs and #6 in highest paying jobs without a degree.

But can a plumbing career give you job satisfaction? Let’s look at what a plumber does daily, the benefits, and the education requirements of a plumbing career.

What Do Plumbers Do On A Day-to-Day Basis?

There is a common misconception that plumbing is a dirty, stinky job. But the truth is, it can be an extremely rewarding career path if you are passionate about helping people and have a knack for fixing things.

Plumbers install and repair pipes, fixtures, and fittings related to water or drainage systems. In addition, plumbers also:

  • Install appliances and fixtures like dishwashers, sinks, and toilets
  • Maintain or repair plumbing by examining broken pipes
  • Clear clogged drains
  • Locate and define where pipes should go
  • And more!

What Are The Benefits of a Career in Plumbing?

For one thing, it’s a skilled trade that offers a lot of autonomy and freedom. And since plumbing problems will always pop up, there’s a good amount of job security.

Plus, it’s a relatively low-stress occupation. Sure, there’s the occasional plumbing emergency, but for the most part, plumbers can work at their own pace without a lot of pressure.

Other benefits include variety, independence, and advancement opportunities. Plumbing is a regulated trade, so you can choose how high up the levels you want to go.

No two days are the same, and each plumbing-related job is different, so you can expect endless opportunities for variety. And plumbers work in all types of industries too.

Plumbers are in high demand across the country, so if you’re looking for a career that offers job security and satisfaction, this may be a perfect choice. Especially if you enjoy a challenge, like helping people, don’t want to work in an office setting, and are excited about learning new techniques like hydro-excavation!

What Are The Education Requirements?

Another benefit to becoming a plumber is education. Unlike some jobs that require long years in a university setting, a job in plumbing doesn’t. You can begin an apprenticeship after completing high school or obtaining a GED (without student loans!).

Four years of experience is the standard requirement, but college credit can be applied too. Once you have gained enough experience, you can apply for a plumbing license and take the exam. After passing the exam and obtaining a license, 14 hours of continuing education every two years is the requirement for plumbers in Florida.

As we mentioned, plumbing is a regulated field, but the possibilities are endless. You can decide how many certifications and licenses you want. It is a career that can grow with you.
