Understanding Pipe Relining

pipe relining
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Every home has a piping infrastructure that ensures that all your water and sewerage are properly drained. We tend to forget about this valuable network of piping channels until something goes wrong such as a blockage or pipe corrosion. Pipe relining is an ingenious way to replace pipelines without running into exorbitant costs. Let’s take a look at how pipe relining works and why you should consider it as a part of your plumbing maintenance routine.

What Is Pipe Relining?

Pipe relining is a new kind of technology that can be used to repair blocked or cracked drainpipes. The main advantage of pipe relining is that the entire process is done above the ground which eliminates the need for invasive digging which comes with potential damage. Pipe relining repairs your pipes by using a special resin to cure the pipe from the inside. Over time this resin dries to form a strong bond and, in some cases, can even leave your pipe stronger than before it was damaged. This ‘trench-less’ technology saves money as no labor-intensive digging is required.

How Pipe Relining Works

The process will begin with a site visit made by a qualified technician. The technician will inspect your drainage system by using CCTV equipment. This real-time footage will reveal the conditions of the pipe and what the cause of the damage is. In many cases, this can be an underlying root problem. Once the extent of the damage has been estimated, the drain is then cleaned out with hydro jets which flush out any scale and debris build-up as well as any obstructions which may be causing a blockage.

Once the pipe has been thoroughly cleaned, the technician will then put together a custom-fitted liner which is inserted into your drain. The CCTV camera system will ensure that these items are correctly positioned over the damaged section of your pipe. This is when the magic begins as compressed air inflates the liner which causes the epoxy resin to mold and stick onto the inner surface of the drain. The resin then cures after a few hours and your new pipe is formed. The liner is then removed, and a final CCTV camera inspection is carried out to make sure your new drain is good to go.

The Benefits Of Pipe Relining

Pipe relining comes with some clear benefits that are worth considering.

  • It’s Non-Invasive

Pipe relining is a completely non-invasive approach to fixing your piping system. This not only saves you time and money but may save you a corrective landscaping project after if half your lawn had to be dug up. Various plants and flowers can take months if not years to grow back to how they were before. Relining ensures that your home goes largely untouched and eliminates all those peripheral costs.

  • It’s Safe

Digging up your ground surface poses a safety risk to those who walk over that area. Trenches and holes can be the cause of potential accident spots. This poses a risk to the elderly who may be more vulnerable on their feet, and always inhibits children from being able to play in the yard during the time of the repair. Even after the repair is covered up, the ground may not be as stable as before.

  • It’s A Quick And Durable Repair

Pipe relining is a quick process as there is no digging and pipeline laying required. Relining simply takes a few hours from start to completion and saves your environment from additional damage that may have been caused otherwise. The epoxy resin also cures incredibly strong and will last for years to come. You’re looking at an incredible 50-year lifespan!
