Roles And Responsibilities Of A Drain Cleaning Technician

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Do you have an annual drain cleaning schedule? Most people do not give their plumbing pipes and drains a second thought until they block.

It’s ironic how drains appear to know when you’re in a rush in the mornings and choose that time to block. A blocked drain is not something you can ignore but it is something you can prevent. Let’s find out why a drain cleaning technician should play an important role in any home maintenance schedule.

What Does A Drain Cleaning Technician Do?

Drain cleaning technicians are professionals who are trained to work on plumbing systems and drains. Their roles and responsibilities include:

  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing all plumbing pipes and drains.
  • Diagnosing and clearing stubborn plumbing clogs in all pipes and drains including:
    • Floor drains
    • Sinks
    • Tubs
    • Showers
    • Toilets
    • Urinals
  • Knowing how to safely use, clean, and maintain plumbing tools and equipment such as:
    • Electric snakes
    • High-velocity water jets (Hydro-Jets)
    • Sewer video cameras and equipment
  • Knowing how to use, maintain and store their safety gear and equipment correctly.
  • Having the professional knowledge to educate their clients on preventing and resolving blocked drains.
  • Knowing how to protect the client’s assets when working in their homes, and clean up after the job is done. They do so by making use of:
    • Protective mats
    • Protective shoe covers

Why Do Plumbing Drains Need Regular Maintenance?

Plumbing pipes and drains are usually out of sight and seldom noticed unless there is a problem. There are many reasons a drain can block including:

  • There is a problem with the main sewer line.
  • Root invasion in the outside drain or main sewer.
  • The drain is cracked or broken.
  • Large objects have been flushed into the drain.
  • Kitchen and bathroom drains are not cleaned regularly and are blocked by soap, hair, and food particles.

To prevent unwanted blockages, plumbing technicians advise annual inspection and cleaning (or more often if necessary) for the following reasons:

  • To prolong the drain’s lifespan.
  • To get rid of bad odors (even small blockages can emit bad odors)
  • To diagnose and repair any small issues before they become big, expensive problems.
  • Clean drain faster. Clogs are unlikely to form in a fast-draining drain.
