Is your pool the first place you would think of when it comes to having a glass of water? I can hear the collective eeeww… no I would never drink a glass of water from my pool. If you turn the tap on in your home and have a glass of water most of the time that water actually has more chlorine in it than the typical swimming pool. I know, the next thing out of your mouth is going to be, “I buy bottled water and would never drink from the tap, that’s nasty.” Okay let’s see, is your refrigerator connected to the tap water? If so, every ice cube is going to be made from tap water.
I’m also just taking a wild guess that you probably shower or bathe on a regular basis, at least those around you hope you do. Here we go with a short science lesson. When you heat water the chlorine in the water is also heated. Now chlorine when heated goes from a liquid state to a gaseous state. Also, while showering away all of your pores open up nice and wide, so between breathing and the amount of chlorine gas you absorb you might as well go drink eight big glasses of tap water, as that is how much chlorine has just entered your body!
Chlorine is not the only thing that enters your body from the water coming out of you city’s water supply. You have ammonia, lead, copper, prescription drugs, and pesticides to name a few. The city’s job is to deliver “safe” water to your home. As with everything, my definition of safe and the government’s definition of safe are very different things. The government’s definition means that the water won’t make you sick right away. City water has containments in it that can cause health problems if left untreated. I don’t often agree with many things that our government says, however, if you do a little digging the EPA and several other agencies within our government recommend that everyone in the good old United States of America should have some form of water treatment on their homes.
Okay first off, what exactly in MY water is it that I need to know about? Head on over to Google and type the name of your city or water district and the words “water quality report”. Each city sends out an annual report via snail mail that I am guessing most of you have never read as it looks like the typical junk mail that we all launch into the recycle bin daily. So back to our online water quality report, first you are going to see a list of all the yummy stuff that is in the water, and then there is usually a range of how much of a particular thing was discovered. The range is there as the water is tested many times over the course of a year and levels vary depending on a multitude of factors.
The good news is that we can fix it. We offer a variety of solutions when it comes to improving the quality of water in your home from basic under the sink filters that will give you bottled or better quality drinking water, to entire home systems that ensure every fixture in your home is only delivering the cleanest safest water possible. Bonus points; when you have filtered water in the home not only are you receiving all the benefits, but so are all your fixtures and appliances that have anything to do with H2O. Cleaner water means longer life for all.
