Why You Need a Licensed Plumber

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Many people pride themselves on being able to do odd jobs and repairs around the house. When it’s no big deal – like tightening a faucet – the do-it-yourself option is fine. However, there are some jobs that you just shouldn’t tackle by yourself, especially when it comes to your plumbing. In those instances, it’s always best to hire a licensed professional for top-quality plumbing services.

Why Do I Need a Plumber?

More often than not, knowing when to call a licensed plumber is about recognizing that you’re out of your depth. If you don’t have the necessary skill, knowledge, and gear to do a repair or installation at home, you may end up causing more damage than anticipated.

Professional plumbing requires a great deal of skill and experience. An expert plumber is also going to have access to the right equipment for the job. Also, because most states require plumbers to renew their licenses fairly regularly, professional plumbers and contractors will stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and tools, workplace practices, and local regulations.

When Do I Need a Plumber?

Some problems are more obvious than others. If you come home to discover that a pipe is broken and leaking, you probably know immediately that a plumber is in order. But what about other tasks that seem like a DIY project?

  • For a clogged drain, most of us turn to a chemical drain cleaner. But, as we mentioned in our previous post, this is often an ineffective solution that can also cause damage to your drains in the long run. And don’t forget that these chemicals are bad for the environment, and potentially dangerous to have around the home (especially if you have small children). A licensed plumber will be able to unclog your drain using a rooter – a much more thorough and environmentally-friendly solution.
  • Sometimes a leak can be repaired simply with a quick tightening with your wrench, or by replacing an old washer. But some leaks occur due to structural damage or rust, and the pipes or parts need to be replaced entirely. This is when you definitely need the services of a licensed plumber.
  • Similarly, if you’re remodeling your home, it’s best to call in a professional. A poorly-installed plumbing system can lead to all kinds of problems. Even a small leak you’re unaware of can cause serious water damage, or lead to dangerous molds growing in your walls. It can also cost you a fortune when you receive your water bill for the month!
  • Installations are also big jobs that require professional expertise. Whether it’s replacing an old toilet, installing a new trash disposal, or finally investing in that luxurious hot tub you’ve always wanted, you’ll be better off hiring a professional to do the work. Many installations require special licensing, often necessitating 4 years of work experience or a college degree.

So next time you’re reaching for the toolbox, looking for a quick-fix to your plumbing problems, rather be safe and call in a professional. For more information about quality plumbing services you can trust, contact Art Plumbing, AC and Electric.
