Plumbing problems can happen to the best of us, even if we ensure that we have preventative maintenance plans in place. You may think it’s only ever happened to you, but there are a few well known plumbing problems that happen to most, if not all, homeowners. The trick is knowing when to panic and call in a professional for help, no matter what time it is during the night or when to wait until normal operating hours to have a technician sent out.
Problems with Your Drain
This happens in every household. In your bathroom the problem is generally caused by a build-up of hair or soap scum in the drain. In your kitchen it could be due to remnants of greasy food or oils that you may dispose of in your kitchen sink.
While you don’t necessarily need to call your plumber in at 2am to resolve it, depending on the severity of the blockage, you may want to call your technician as soon as the business opens. One way to avoid dealing with blocked drains is to use a hair catcher in your bathroom and avoid disposing of your leftover oils in your kitchen sink.
A Running Toilet
This is almost exactly what it sounds like. While your toilet may not be entering the next marathon, your water is, however, constantly filling the bowl, which will increase the amount you owe on your water bill if you don’t fix it as soon as possible.
This can be an easily resolvable problem or it can be something that needs to be seen to at once. It all depends on the severity of the ‘run’ and calling your local plumber in, will be at your discretion. You need to visually assess the problem and decide if it needs to be seen to immediately or if it can wait until morning. It is advised that you do have it fixed as soon as possible in order to save money on costly utility bills.
You may not bother to fix a leaky fixture (faucet) in your home, but some may find the constant sound of dripping water to be annoying. If you believe that losing a droplet or two of water won’t make too much of a difference, you need to remember that every drop counts. It will have an adverse impact on your utility bill.
This isn’t something you need to call in a technician to resolve at 3am, unless the sound is driving you up the wall. You will, however, need to get it seen to as it’s not a complicated problem to resolve. By fixing your leaky fixtures you also negate any adverse side effects it may have, such as causing your fixtures to rust or acting as a catalyst for mold growth.
Subpar Water Pressure
Trying to shower when your water pressure is feeble at best can be one of the most frustrating things. There are a variety of reasons that this could be happening such as the age of your plumbing system or issues with the local water supply.
You may not be able to do anything if the problem lies with the local municipal water supply, but if the problem is the age of your system or an unknown leak, you’ll definitely want to call a licensed technician to resolve this as quickly as possible during the day.
Burst Water Pipe
This is one of the worst things that can happen to any home owner, if your pipes are too old or damaged in any way due to severe weather conditions such as the aftermath of a hurricane or roots growing through and around your piping, you may end up with a burst pipe. Everything in your home will be waterlogged and you may end up losing precious memories and electronics in the process.
There is no time to delay, call in an emergency plumber immediately before the damage to your property becomes completely irreparable.
