Home Plumbing Dishwasher Installation Tips

Home Plumbing

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A dishwasher is an effective solution to the problem of stacked up dirty dishes on the kitchen counter. With new and sophisticated energy-saving dishwashers, you can make your purchase with the satisfaction of knowing that you are saving water and electricity while keeping your home tidy and clean. However, the excitement of getting a new dishwasher is often followed by the frustration of installing it. The harsh truth is that improper dishwasher installation may flush your new investment down the drain. Dishwasher installation requires knowledge of your home plumbing system, or the risk of damaging the new dishwasher in the process increases.

Basic Process of Dishwasher Installation

Installing a dishwasher is not as complicated as it may initially seem. There are a few standard steps that one can follow to attempt an installation.

  • Prepare the Area
Prepare the necessary tools, such as a screwdriver, adjustable wrench and pliers. Have a shallow pan or bucket ready to gather any water that may still be left in the pipes when you get to removing the old dishwasher. If you are inserting a dishwasher for the first time, make sure that the dishwasher fits into the space by measuring the area.
  • Disconnect the Old Dishwasher
For the sake of safety, turn off the power. Remove the front panel and use a voltage tester to ensure that the power is off. Disconnect the water supply and the drain, making sure that the excess water goes into the shallow pan to avoid making a mess. Once everything has been disconnected, pull the old dishwasher out and clean the area for the new one to go in.
  • Prepare the New Dishwasher
Prepare the new appliance by removing it from the box and making sure that there are no scratches or damage. It is always advised to read the owner’s manual before attempting anything. Once unpacked, screw on the water valve, attach the drain line, and adjust the dishwasher feet to set it to the correct height.
  • Hook the Appliance Up and Reconnect It
Once you have prepared the new dishwasher, gently slide it into place. It is a good idea to protect the kitchen floor with a piece of cardboard as you slide it in. Align and level the appliance so that it sits flush with the adjacent cabinets and level with the floor. Once happy with the placement, attach the water supply by threading on the compression nut and tightening it with a wrench. Complete the drain and electrical connections to finish the job. Securing the dishwasher in place with screws will be the final touch to your new best friend in the kitchen.

Mistakes to Avoid When Installing a Dishwasher

  • If you are replacing an older dishwasher, you may find that the plumbing lines need to be replaced. A professional plumber will be able to give the best advice on this change.
  • As a dishwasher involves both electricity and water, it is very important to take the necessary safety precautions to not get electrocuted. Make sure that you switch off all electrical power when attempting an installation.
  • Forgetting to measure the dishwasher and the space it will be sitting is an extremely common (and frustrating) mistake made by many home owners. It is important to not only measure the size of the dishwasher, but also the drain lines.
  • Running the drain tubing or supply line incorrectly is another common mistake and can risk a sink drain back-up.

Regardless of how simple a dishwasher installation may seem at first, there are risks of mistakes being made. If these instructions seem slightly intimidating – don’t worry. There are professional plumbers in your area that are well acquainted with various plumbing systems that can assist you with your dishwasher installation, without any stress or fuss. In addition, if you find that you have made one of the above mistakes, Art Plumbing, AC & Electric offer emergency plumbing services for your convenience.
