Awesome (& Trendy) Home Automation Ideas

Home Automation Ideas
Reading Time: 3 minutes

One of the great things about the continuous advancements in technology is that certain things that used to be far out of reach to people that aren’t millionaires has quickly become a lot more mainstream and accessible to everyone. An example of this and one of the best ways to make use of technology in our everyday lives is to incorporate smart automation ideas into our homes. Home automation refers to making use of smart devices to perform various actions or tasks that would usually be done manually, which can help save you time, money, and even energy.

The concept of creating a smart home used to be associated with the rich and famous but the long-term benefits have started to capture a much wider market. With that being said, not all home automation ideas are created equal, so let’s discuss the most awesome (& trendy) home automation ideas available today.

1. Smart Thermostats

A smart thermostat is a great way to save you time, money and energy and it’s a great start if you’re looking at making your first step to creating a smarter home. A smart thermostat can be programmed to run on a schedule so that your air conditioning unit can lower or raise the temperatures throughout the day and night without you having to manually do it.

This is a huge energy saver as your HVAC system can adjust itself to match your schedule. This means that you can set the temperature to be closer to the outside temperature when you’re out during the day and be ready to adjust to the correct temperature before you get home.

2. Zone Control Systems

Zone control systems are the logical next step from a smart thermostat and allow you to control the heating and cooling of different rooms in your home. This is really useful to help you cut costs and increase energy savings while not compromising on your home comforts. This is also really useful if different members of your family prefer different temperatures, because it allows you to make sure every room or area of the house is adjusted to meet individual needs.

Zone control systems can also be beneficial when you want to open up the windows in certain rooms for natural ventilation and improve your indoor air quality, then the AC can be switched off in those rooms.

3. Humidity Sensors

Humidity sensors work together with your bathroom fan so that after your shower is finished you can leave the fan running and the sensors will detect when the humidity in the room gets below a certain level and automatically turn the fan off. This acts as an energy-saver and is extremely convenient if you need to leave soon after taking a shower. The great thing about humidity sensors is that you don’t need to replace your bathroom fan but can simply just replace your fan switch with a smart switch.

4. Voice Assistants

Voice assistants such as Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa are very popular home automation features. Voice assistants can integrate with the smart devices throughout your home by turning off the lights before bedtime or when you are leaving the house. This can be extremely useful if you have multiple light switches all over the house and want to turn them all off at once using only your voice command. All you will need is a home voice assistant and smart lights or a smart light switch that can be controlled by your home voice assistant.

5. Moisture Sensors

Moisture sensors can be a very useful home automation idea to detect leaks in your home and avoid water damage caused by flooding. In order for it to work, moisture sensors can be placed in areas in your home where there could be a potential leak such as bathrooms or the kitchen. The moisture sensors would then detect if there was any excess water where there shouldn’t be and trigger the sensor to switch off the water for the entire house. All you will need to do is purchase a smart water valve that connects to the manual switch for your water.

Moisture sensors are a really smart investment. A water leak can end up costing you a lot of money if it goes undetected – not only will you have a pretty hefty water bill but you could also be left with severe water damage to fix too.
