Air Conditioning Service and Tune-up

When did you last service your air conditioning unit? If you can’t remember, then now is the ideal time to get your air conditioning serviced and tuned. Why? Most people tend to ignore their AC until it breaks down. But this actually leads to costly and unnecessary repairs. To avoid these repairs, your AC needs regular maintenance and tune-ups in order to function properly. Having your air conditioner regularly examined by an experienced technician for any replacements or small repairs will boost its performance and extend its life expectancy. Don’t wait until an emergency arises and your pocket suffers; get your air conditioner serviced and rest assured it will work all summer long.

What should be included in the tune-up?
It is important that you have your AC regularly checked by an experienced technician. A complete air conditioning service should include the following services:

  • Checking and cleaning (or replacing) filters, condenser coils, and evaporator coils
  • Checking all electrical connections
  • Lubricating motors
  • Checking for refrigerant leaks and topping-up up low refrigerant
  • Checking the thermostat
  • Cleaning and flushing drain lines
  • Inspecting ductwork and repairing any leaks

What can you do in between tune-ups?
One of the most important and easiest things that you can do in between maintenance and tune-ups to ensure that your air conditioning performs at its best is to regularly change or clean its filters. A dirty filter can reduce the efficiency of your AC and increase your energy consumption by 5% to 15%.

Filters are usually situated behind the vents in ceilings and walls, or in the air handler. Depending on the type and quality of filter you use, you can either wash it or replace it with a new one. The frequency that you will need to change your filters depend on a few factors: indoor and outdoor air quality (you will need to change filters more often if you smoke inside your home or have pets), the cleanliness of your ducts, the quality of your filters, and how much your AC is used (in winter months, you may need to change filters less often as you use your AC less often – just remember to check them before summer).

Another easy maintenance tip that you can do is to make sure that your outside unit stays free and clear of any debris and close-growing bushes or branches – this will ease airflow to your unit and prevent it from having to work overtime to cool your home.
